History
In 1996, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the use of latanoprost for medical purposes in the United States. The medication is included in the List of Essential Medicines issued by the World Health Organization (WHO).
Medical Uses
Xalatan decreases the pressure in the affected eye caused by underlying conditions mentioned below. It works by increasing the amount of fluid draining from the affected eye with the onset of its beneficial effect typically felt within four hours. The effect also lasts for up to 24 hours.
Aside from ocular hypertension, the primary uses for Xalatan are in the treatment of:
- Open-angle glaucoma wherein the medication reduced intraocular pressure levels by 22 to 29 percent within 1 to 2 months of regular and proper use.
- Closed-angle glaucoma wherein the intraocular pressure can be reduced more effectively than with the use of timolol in many cases.
Warning/Precaution
Always remove your contact lenses before applying the eye drops as these can result in discoloration in soft contact lenses. Be sure to wait for 15 minutes or more after applying the eye drops before wearing your contacts lenses again.
Even with proper use according to your doctor’s prescription, the use of Xalatan can cause gradual changes in the color of the eyes, eyelashes, and/or eyelids, even in the increased length and/or thickness of the lashes in the eye being treated. The changes may be gradual but these can also become permanent.
The common side effects include redness of the eye, blurry vision, and itchiness, as well as an iris darkening.
