History
In 1996, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved latanoprost for medical purposes in the United States. In addition, the medication is on the List of Essential Medicines issued by the World Health Organization (WHO).
Medical Uses
Xalatan decreases the affected eye pressure caused by the underlying conditions mentioned below. It works by increasing the amount of fluid draining from the affected eye with the onset of its beneficial effect typically felt within four hours. The result also lasts for up to 24 hours.
Aside from ocular hypertension, the primary uses for Xalatan are in the treatment of:
- Open-angle glaucoma wherein the medication reduced intraocular pressure levels by 22 to 29 percent within 1 to 2 months of regular and proper use.
- In many cases, you can reduce Closed-angle glaucoma with intraocular pressure more effectively than with timolol.
Warning/Precaution
Permanently remove your contact lenses before applying the eye drops, as these can result in discoloration in soft contact lenses. Be sure to wait 15 minutes or more after using the eye drops before wearing your contact lenses again.
Even with proper use according to your doctor’s prescription, Xalatan can cause gradual changes in the color of the eyes, eyelashes, or eyelids. The changes may be gradual, but these can also become permanent.
The common side effects include redness of the eye, blurry vision, itchiness, and an iris darkening.
