History

Nariman Mehta was the first person to make bupropion while Burroughs Wellcome patented it in 1969; Burroughs Wellcome was acquired by GlaxoSmithKline.

But it was only in 1989 when the medication was approved for medical use by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the United States. Known by amfebutamone, its former generic name, its current generic name was adopted in 2000.

Medical Uses

Wellbutrin is primarily used in several ways, namely:

  • For the treatment of depression, especially since it doesn’t cause health issues present in most other antidepressants, such as sexual dysfunction, weight gain, and sleepiness. Doctors may or may not prescribe it along with selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs).
  • For the prevention of seasonal affective disorder, as approved by the FDA in 2006.
  • As a smoking cessation aid since it can decrease the severity of cravings for nicotine and the associated withdrawal symptoms. The drug is most useful when used by people who have no history of depression.

In case of the third use, the typical treatment plan can last up to 12 weeks. Most smokers, however, can cease using tobacco products in approximately 10 days during the course’s duration.

Other uses for Wellbutrin include for the treatment of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and sexual dysfunction although these are considered as off-label use.

Warning/Precaution

The major side effect of Wellbutrin is the increased risk for epileptic seizures. For this reason, take the medication as prescribed since too much of it will increase said risk. Unless you have a seizure, never stop suddenly taking it and inform your doctor in case you experienced a seizure.
