History of Walmart’s Vision Center
NVI was founded in 1990 and currently operates all Walmart’s Vision Centers. Berkshire Partners acquired America’s Best Contacts & Eyeglasses (with 112 stores) and NVI in 2005, and both were merged. In 2009, NVI bought Eyeglass World, turning the retailer around successfully with a new strategy and better-merchandising schemes. And in 2011, the company bought AC Lens, one of its long-time partners.
AC Lens is one of the largest online contact lens providers and optical retailers for the US Market. They own more than 800 outlets, with retail locations in 44 states and employing about 8,000 individuals. Their goal is to put up 75 new places every year.
Its retail divisions include Vision Centers by Walmart, Eyeglass World, America’s Best Contacts & Eyeglasses, Vista Optical in some military bases, and Vista Optical inside Fred Meyer. Walmart Vision Centers are in 200 locations across the country.
NVI has three locations in the country for their laboratory network: Lawrenceville, Georgia, Salt Lake City, Utah, and St. Cloud, Minnesota. Outside the United States, their locations are in Mexico and China.
Their laboratory network is one of the most effective and efficient available. Most importantly, their focus is on fast turnaround time, low cost, high efficiency, and high-quality production. They have the means to route their eyeglass requirements to the best labs in the United States and abroad. Currently, they employ about 600 laboratory employees.
Walmart’s Vision Centers offer eyeglasses at affordable prices, starting from $38. They have both classic and quality styles for their frames, including designer brands such as DKNY, Baby Phat, and Ray-Ban
The contact lenses department has a wide selection of brands at very competitive prices. Some of their more popular brands are:
- Air Optix
- Bausch + Lomb
For sunglasses, for non-prescription, they offer Ray-Ban and Bolle, among others. For prescription sunglasses, they are widely available with any ophthalmic frame.
The accessory department sells lens cleaning cloths, eyeglass cleaners, cords, cases, sports, and safety glasses.

Tips for selecting your perfect eyeglasses
Is your face oval-shaped? Most frames can accommodate your face because oval-shaped faces tend to display slight curves and balanced features. If you want a more natural look, avoid large and small frames. However, if you prefer to add some spice instead, you should shoot for square or rectangular frames. They will contrast against your facial structure quite nicely.
How about round-faces? In that case, your best bet is to go for square, angular or rectangular shapes. Angular shapes allow you to play against your cheeks and rounded chin to emphasize your eyes thoroughly.
Do you have a square-shaped face? Square faces benefit the most from oval and round frames. The reasoning behind this is that your face is more pronged to exhibit straight lines, with a broad forehead and a square chin. To balance the lines in your face, you should go with rounded, soft edges. Rounded edges will make your whole look stand out from the rest.
Is your face heart-shaped? There’s no simple rule for this one. Balance is vital, so you could try different widths to see which one works best for you. For instance, you could try to narrow your lower half of the face by choosing bottom-heavy frames. You can switch (or combine) with oval shapes if you want to soften your chin.
What frame materials do they have available at Walmart Vision Center?
If you are looking for something lightweight, sturdy, and in a wide range of available colors, then you can find Plastic or Zyl frames available.
However, you can also select from their variety of metal frames made from Titanium, Beryllium, or Monel for a more modern and sleek look.
