NVI was founded in 1990 and is currently the operator of Walmart’s Vision Centers. Berkshire Partners acquired America’s Best Contacts & Eyeglasses (with 112 stores) and NVI in 2005; the two acquisitions were later merged. In 2009, NVI bought Eyeglass World, turning the retailer around successfully by implementing a new marketing strategy and better merchandising schemes. And in 2011, the company bought AC Lens, one of its long-time partners.
In the United States, AC Lens is considered one of the largest online providers of contact lens, and one of the country’s largest optical retailers in general. They have over 800 outlets and they have retail locations in 44 states, plus Puerto Rico and District of Columbia. Their goal is to put up 75 new locations every year.
The company currently has more than 8,000 employees, and their retail divisions include Vision Centers by Walmart, Eyeglass World, America’s Best Contacts & Eyeglasses, Vista Optical in some military bases, and Vista Optical inside Fred Meyer. Vision Centers can be found in 200 Walmart locations across the country.
NVI has three locations in the country for their laboratory network: Lawrenceville, Georgia, Salt Lake City, Utah, and St. Cloud, Minnesota. Outside the United States, their locations are in Mexico and China.
Their network of laboratories has been recognized as one of the most effective and efficient in the industry. This is due to having more than 600 laboratory employees, and the company’s focus on fast turnaround time, low cost, high efficiency, and high quality production. They have the means to route their eyeglass requirements to the best labs in the United States and abroad.
Complete eyeglasses are offered in Vision Centers, with affordable prices, starting from $38. The frames of the glasses have classic and quality styles, and they also sell designer brands, such as DKNY, Baby Phat, and Ray- Ban. For contact lenses, the brands sold at their shops include Acuvue, Air Optix, Alcon, Bausch + Lomb, Biofinity, Dailies, Equate, Focus, Frequency, Freshlook, Proclear, PureVision, PureVision2, SofLens, and Ultraflex, with prices that are highly competitive.
Prescription sunglasses are also available as they can be made with any ophthalmic frame. Ray-Ban and Bolle are some of the well-known labels of non-prescription sunglasses that they offer. Other accessories that are sold in their outlets include: lens cleaning cloths, eyeglass cleaner, cords, and cases, as well as sports and safety glasses.
