Valtrex is the brand of valacyclovir or valaciclovir, an antiviral drug administered for the effective management of certain cases of herpes virus infections. This is a prodrug, which means that it is converted in vivo into acyclovir.
Here’s a list of Valtrex prices:
The Food and Drug Administration approved valacyclovir for medical use in 1995. Valtrex is a product of GlaxoSmithKline.
Valtrex works by slowing down the growth including its spread through the body of the herpes virus. Thus, it aids the body in fighting the infection, particularly in reducing the severity and duration of the symptoms.
The medication is used for the treatments of the following infections:
- Genital herpes simplex
- Herpes zoster or shingles
- Cold sores in children 12 years old and up
- Chicken pox in children at least 2 years old
It is also prescribed for the prevention of cytomegalovirus after an organ transplant. It has also been used as a prophylaxis against the herpes virus among patients with a compromised immune system, such as in cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy.
Emphasis must be made that Valtrex isn’t a cure for herpes and, in fact, it will not prevent the spread of the herpes virus from an infected person to another.
Tell your doctor if you have the following conditions before taking the medication:
- Kidney disease, especially if you’re on a dialysis program
- Bone marrow or kidney transplant
- Weak or compromised immune system
The common side effects of Valtrex use include vomiting, nausea, headache, and diarrhea while the less common reactions include vertigo, agitation, and confusion, among others.
