History

In 2004, the combo of emtricitabine and tenofovir was approved for clinical use in the United States. Due to its importance in combating the HIV/AIDS epidemic, it is listed on the List of Essential Medicines of the World Health Organization.

Medical Uses

Truvada is used in the prevention and treatment of HIV/AIDS. In the United States, it is administered as a pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for the prevention of an HIV infection, as approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on 16 July 2012.

According to FDA guidelines, the medication can be used for this purpose for high-risk groups including but not limited to:

  • Homosexual or bisexual men who have been diagnosed with a sexually transmitted disease (STD) in the past six months or who have engaged in unprotected anal sex (i.e., without a condom);
  • Heterosexual men and women who don’t use condoms on a regular basis particularly with people who have high risk for HIV or who have unknown HIV status;
  • People who have injected illicit drugs in the last 30 days while sharing needles and syringes, among other equipment; and
  • Heterosexual and homosexual partners wherein one is HIV-negative and the other is HIV-positive

Truvada is also used in the treatment of HIV infection in children at least 12 years old and adults. But it isn’t a cure for HIV/AIDS!

Warning/Precaution

The common side effects of Truvada use include headaches, weight loss, abdominal pain, and diarrhea, while the rare side effects include worsening of the symptoms of Hepatitis B infection. As with all prescription medications, be sure to follow the prescribed dosage.
