History
The Cole National Corporation (CNC) was an optical retailer in the Caribbean, Canada, and the United States, operating in nearly 3,000 locations. During its time, the company went into specialty retail venues, including watchbands, shoe repair, cookie baking, and children’s toys, among many others. Optical retail’s role became significant in its growth strategy when it acquired Pearle Inc. in 1996. This deal made them the second-biggest optical retailer in America.
The company incorporated the retail centers of Pearle Vision into their Licensed Brands unit, which, at that time, was operating B.J.’s Optical Stores, Sears Optical, and Target Optical. Cole Licensed Brands and Pearle Vision had a wide disparity in business models because of the different customers. While CNC’s outlets serviced moderate-income earners, Pearle focused on more upscale clientele. Due to an increase in competition and the steep acquisition cost, its profits stalled for several years.
With threats from corrective laser eye surgeries and a sluggish economy, they were still a prime target for bigger corporations looking to expand their business. CNC still held a profitable operation back then. They became the leading provider of optical services and products when Luxottica S.P.A took over. Another group that wanted to acquire them was Hong Kong’s Moulin International Holdings Ltd.
