Symbicort consists of two active ingredients. First, budesonide reduces inflammation in the affected areas (i.e., steroid). Second, formoterol relaxes the airways’ muscles, thus, improving the breathing pattern (i.e., bronchodilator).

History
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approves this medication.
Medical Uses
Symbicort is a medication used to prevent bronchospasm in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma. When administered properly, it can improve patients’ breathing and, thus, increase their quality of life. Children must at least be six years old for a qualified doctor to prescribe the medication.
Patients should only use the medication if they have asthma under certain conditions. It would be best to control asthma effectively using other long-term maintenance medicines. Once the severe asthma attacks stop, the doctor slowly takes away the drug from the patient.
Warning/Precaution
Symbicort should be taken only according to the prescribed dose, frequency, and duration. It shouldn’t be taken as a treatment for an asthma attack in progress, too. It may increase the risk of breathing problems, even asthma-related deaths when used outside of the prescribed dose.
Be sure to tell your doctor about underlying medical conditions that can interfere with the drug’s efficacy. These include high blood pressure; heart disease; seizure disorder, cataracts, glaucoma, herpes infection of the eyes; weak immune system; and liver disease.
In children, budesonide can affect their average growth. However, since each case is different, parents must talk with their children’s pediatricians about the matter.
