History
Spiriva was first approved by the Food and Drug Administration for clinical use on 30 January 2004.
Medical Uses
Spiriva is a bronchodilator so it works by relaxing the muscles in the airways and, thus, increasing air flow to the lungs. For this reason, it’s used in the prevention of the narrowing of the lungs’ airways (i.e., bronchospasm) in patients with COPD. It’s a long-term maintenance medication usually prescribed for use on a once-a-day basis, especially in decreasing the chances for flare-ups and worsening of symptoms.
It’s also used as treatment for the management of bronchitis and emphysema. It can also be prescribed as maintenance therapy for children with asthma (i.e., 6 years old and up).
Warning/Precaution
The capsule shouldn’t be taken by mouth as it should only be used with the HandiHaler device. Be sure to use it as a preventive medication (i.e., prevent bronchospasm attacks) instead of using it when an attack is underway. Otherwise, it will not give the desired results of reversing your symptoms; a fast-acting inhalation medication should be used instead.
Inform your doctor before using Spiriva when you have narrow angle glaucoma, enlarged prostate, or kidney disease, among others. Tell your doctor about medications used for the treatment of an underlying medical condition, such as an overactive bladder, Parkinson’s disease, or depression, to name a few issues.
Follow the medication directions recommended by your doctor, such as sticking to the dosage of 2 puffs per day. Getting higher and lower doses will not produce optimum results.
