History
James Ruben founded Shopko on 1962 with the first store located in Green Bay. Between 1992 and 2005. The company was listed on the New York Stock Exchange. Starting in December 2005, it became a privately-held company again when Sun Capital Partners acquired it.

Shopko has more than 350 stores located in 25 states across the United States including Wisconsin, California, Idaho, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Kentucky, Missouri, Minnesota, Montana, and South Dakota, among others. The stores are usually located in small to medium-sized cities and towns, particularly in shopping malls, strip malls, and power centers. The chain also maintains freestanding locations, most of which have walk-in clinics known as FastCare; the walk-in clinics are in partnerships with local hospitals like Bellin Health.
The retail chain is also known for its active involvement in the community. The company, for example, is the sponsor of the Shopko Hall, the venue part of the exhibition hall at the Brown County Veterans Memorial Arena.
Shopko also maintains several subsidiaries. The Shopko Express is a chain of pharmacies that carry over-the-counter and prescription medicines, health and beauty supplies, and groceries and general merchandise, as well as lottery tickets. The Shopko Hometown are usually located in smaller communities and carry most of the merchandise in the Shopko line.
