History
In 1972, Eli Lilly and Company discovered fluoxetine but it was only in 1986 when it was approved for clinical use. It’s included in the World Health Organization’s List of Essential Medicines.
Medical Uses
Sarafem is used in the treatment of several types of mental disorders including:
- Major depressive disorder (i.e., depression)
- Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)
- Bulimia nervosa
- Panic disorder
- premenstrual dysphoric disorder, a severe form of PMS
It works by improving the patient’s sleeping patterns, mood, and physical energy, as well as appetite, even in restoring healthy interest in daily life, especially among depressed patients. It can also reduce feelings of fear and anxiety in people with panic attacks; decrease the strong urge to repeatedly perform tasks among people with OCD; and lessen the symptoms associated with severe premenstrual syndrome, such as depression and irritability.
In many cases, it can even be used as an adjunct treatment for premature ejaculation in men.
The medication is taken orally with the dosage depending on each patient’s unique combination of age, medical condition, and health goals. The improvement in symptoms also varies between individuals although some improvement can be seen within 1-2 weeks. The full benefit of regular and proper medication may happen in 4-5 weeks.
Warning/Precaution
Tell your doctor when you have difficulty dealing with its common side effects, such as loss of appetite, difficulty in sleeping, rashes, dry mouth, and abnormal dreams. Avoid stopping your medication before the recommended duration, as well as extending your dosage without a doctor’s consultation.
