History

Sam’s Club was established in Midwest City, Oklahoma in 1983 by Sam Walton. They made their first acquisition in 1987, when they purchased West Monroe, a SuperSaver Wholesale Warehouse Club from Luisiana. This move expanded the business by 24 locations. Walton’s entry to the Northeast was marked when Sam’s was put up in New Jersey in 1989, and Walmart’s opening in Turnersville, New Jersey in 1991. Walmart bought Kmart’s PACE Membership Warehouse in 1993, and then converted many of its stores into Sam’s Clubs.

The company got a new logo in 2006. During that year, they also removed the slogan ‘We are in Business for Small Business’ to move away from the notion that they only cater to small businesses and not individual customers.

In 2007, they unveiled their new slogan: ‘Enjoy the Possibilities.’ They used this in all their marketing campaigns, except on their website. And in 2007, its latest flagship store was opened in Fayetteville, Arkansas. Its largest retail space (with 185,000 sq ft), however, can be found in Pineville, North Carolina. They changed their slogan yet again in 2009 into ‘Savings Made Simple.’

To purchase in their stores, membership is required, except at the pharmacy and the café. The federal law bans the sales of prescription drugs exclusively, as well as gasoline and liquor in some states. Many Walmart newspaper ads contain a one-day pass, which can be used by non-members. Note however that the prices for non-members have a surcharge of 10% (when allowed by local law), except for the following: alcoholic drinks, café, pharmacy, and optical. The fees for membership are guaranteed at all points during the tenure of membership.

As of January 2016, the company operates a total of 665 membership stores across the United States and Puerto Rico, except in Vermont and Oregon. They have 161 stores in Mexico, 27 in Brazil, and 12 in China.
