History of Sam’s Club
Sam Walton established Sam’s Club in Midwest City, Oklahoma 1983. They made their first acquisition in 1987 when they purchased West Monroe, a SuperSaver Wholesale Warehouse Club from Louisiana. This move expanded the business by 24 locations. Walton’s entry to the Northeast was marked when Sam’s Club opened in New Jersey in 1989 and Walmart’s opening in 1991. Walmart bought Kmart’s PACE Membership Warehouse in 1993 and converted many of its stores into Sam’s Clubs.
The company got a new logo in 2006. The slogan ‘We are in Business for Small Business was retired to remove the notion that they only cater to small businesses and not individual customers.
In 2007, they unveiled their new slogan: ‘Enjoy the Possibilities.’ They used this in all their marketing campaigns, except on their website. That year, they opened their latest flagship store in Fayetteville, Arkansas. However, you can find its most significant retail space (185,000 sq ft or 1.72 ha) in Pineville, North Carolina. In 2009, they changed their slogan to ‘Savings Made Simple.’
As of January 2016, the company operates 665 membership stores across the United States and Puerto Rico, except Vermont and Oregon. In addition, they have 161 stores in Mexico, 27 in Brazil, and 12 in China.
How to shop at Sam’s Club?
You need an active and valid membership, except for the pharmacy and cafe, to purchase anything in their stores. In some states, federal law bans the exclusive sale of prescription drugs, gasoline, or liquor.
Many Walmart newspaper ads contain a one-day pass, which non-members can use. Note, however, that the prices for non-members have a surcharge of 10% (when allowed by local law), except for the following: alcoholic drinks, cafes, pharmacies, and optical. Membership fees don’t change during the tenure of your membership.
