In 1971, its immunosuppressive effect was discovered at Sandoz, too, in a screening test designed by Hartmann F. Stähelin. By 1983, the Food and Drug Administration approved its clinical use.
Medical Uses
Restasis is an ophthalmic emulsion relieves the symptoms caused by dry eyes by aiding in the increase of the eyes’ production of tears. This reduces the inflammation caused by keratoconjunctivitis sicca. The medication is usually applied to the affected eyes two times a day approximately 12 hours apart.
Warning/Precaution
Restasis should only be used upon the direction of your doctor, as well as applied according to the recommended dosage (i.e., number of drops, frequency and duration). Remove your contact lenses before applying the eye drops and wait for 15 minutes before putting them back on after using the medication.
Wait for 15 minutes, too, before using another eye product after applying the medication.
Be sure to wash your hands first before applying the eye drops. Turn the vial upside down a few times to ensure that the eye drops are mixed well before application. Open it just before application and check that the eye drops have a white milky appearance.
After applying the eye drops on your eyes, avoid rubbing and blinking your eyes for a few minutes afterwards.
