Prozac is among the best-known antidepressant under the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) class.
Here’s a list of Prozac prices:
Eli Lilly and Company discovered fluoxetine, the active ingredient in the antidepressant, in 1972. But it was only in 1986 when its medical use was approved. Today, fluoxetine is also on the List of Essential Medicines, a compilation of the safe and effective medicines compiled by the World Health Organization.
Prozac as an SSRI antidepressant is used in the treatment and management of:
- Major depressive disorder
- Bulimia nervosa
- Obsessive-compulsive disorder
- Panic disorder
- Premenstrual dysphoric disorder
- Post-traumatic stress disorder
- Binge eating disorder
- Alcohol dependence
In people 65 years old and up, it may be used to decrease the chances for suicide. In many cases, it may even be used in conjunction with other therapies in the management of premature ejaculation and autism spectrum disorders.
Prozac is an oral medication.
Even with proper use, the drug can cause a wide range of mild side effects including loss of appetite, rash, dry mouth, difficulty in sleeping, and abnormal dreams. But serious side effects can also occur including mania, serotonin syndrome, seizures, increased risk of bleeding, and even increased risk of suicide in younger people (i.e., usually under 25 years old).
When the medication is suddenly stopped, withdrawal symptoms can also be experienced. These include dizziness, anxiety and changes in sensation, even in agitation.
For these reasons, a doctor’s prescription is recommended to reduce the risks of serious side effects and complications, especially among susceptible patients.
