History
Clopidogrel, the generic form, was first documented in 1982. But it wasn’t until 1998 that it was approved for its current medical use.
Medical Uses
Plavix is used in the prevention of stroke and heart attack in high-risk people. These can include individuals with a history of the acute coronary syndrome, myocardial infarction, peripheral artery disease, and stroke. The drug can also be used in conjunction with aspirin as part of dual antiplatelet therapy and heart attacks.
The American College of Cardiology and the American Heart Association also recommends the drug as a loading dose in various situations. These include in advance of fibrinolytic therapy and percutaneous coronary intervention, the latter usually followed with a full year of treatment for patients who have received a vascular stent.
Plavix can also be used as maintenance therapy for patients with a medium to high risk of the abovementioned medical conditions, in case a non-invasive treatment plan is chosen. It can also be used to prevent thrombosis or as an alternative to aspirin as an antiplatelet drug. It may also be used as an alternative to monotherapy in patients with stable ischemic heart disease.
Warning/Precaution
Regular medical check-ups are necessary for the proper use of Plavix. Many patients’ common side effects include nausea, headache, heartburn, itching sensations, and easy bruising. The severe side effects, such as thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura and bleeding, are relatively rare but should be immediately checked by a doctor for safety reasons.
