History

Emil Werner and James Bell first described metformin in scientific literature in 1922 as a product in the synthesis of dimethylguanidine. In 1929, tschesche and slotta, discovered lowering sugar action in rabbits, discovering that it was the most potent biguanide analog that they have studied on.

Medical Use

As mentioned, people who suffer from type 2 diabetes use metformin to lower the level of their blood sugar when it goes over the top after they eat in the evening. People who suffer from polycystic ovary syndrome to control the hormones also use it.

Warnings and precautions

One of the most common side effects you can get from metformin is gastrointestinal irritation, which includes nausea, vomiting, cramps, diarrhea, and increased flatulence. If you are experiencing these symptoms, make sure to contact your doctor immediately:

  • Lactic acidosis.
  • Impaired kidney or liver functions.
  • Muscle pain or weakness.
  • Trouble breathing.
  • Feeling dizzy.
  • Light headedness.
  • Tired or very weak.
  • Slow or uneven heart rate.
  • Stomach pain
  • Numb or cold feeling in the legs and arms.

Before you take this drug, also make sure that you inform your doctor of any history of allergies that you may have with other medications, so that they can prescribe you something else that will not trigger your allergies.
