History
On October 17, 2006, Janumet was approved by the U.S. food and drug administration and is being marketed in the US under the name Januvia by Merck & Co. on Oct 2, 2007 the FDA approved the drug for oral combination of metformin and sitagliptin formally marked as Janumet.
Medical Uses
As mentioned above, this drug is mainly used to balance the sugar levels found in your body after or before you eat a meal. Since most type 1 or type 2 diabetes patients have a problem with their blood sugar spiking, this will be able to control the high blood sugar. This works better if you accompany it with diet and exercise and maintain a healthy lifestyle. Diet that is rich in fat and too much sugar will cause your blood sugar to spike if you have diabetes.
Warnings and precautions
One precaution that you should be aware of is lactic acidosis. Although this is a rare condition, it is also very serious because it can occur due to accumulation of metformin during usage of Janumet. When this happens, it can become fatal. Lactic acidosis can also happen with a number of pathophysiologic conditions, like diabetes mellitus or whenever a significant hypoperfusion or hypoxemia is present in the tissue. Make sure to consult your doctor first before you take this, to rule out any health risk.
