History
Dr. Alex Ullrich and Dr. H. Michael Shepard were among the scientists who first discovered trastuzumab at Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center in UCLA. As for the drug’s development, it was Dr. Salmon who worked on it. In 2008, a television film made from Dr. Salmon’s work premiered.
The clinical trial started with 15 women in 1992 and expanded to more than 900 in 1996. Due to its success, and pressure from advocates, a lottery system allowed 100 women to access the medication outside the trials for each quarter.
The Food and Drug Administration fast-tracked Herceptin and approved it in September 1998.
Medical Uses
Herceptin has the capacity to interfere with the growth and spread of cancer cells in one’s body. It can treat certain types of breast cancer and stomach cancer, sometimes in combination with other cancer drugs.
Warning/Precaution
If you are pregnant, do not use this drug for it could harm unborn babies. Also, you should avoid becoming pregnant for at least seven months after your last dose of Herceptin.
You should also avoid taking the drug if you have heart disease because it can cause heart failure. The same thing applies if you are taking other cancer medicines.
Meanwhile, take note of the side effects of Herceptin: headache; fever; nausea; dizziness; chills; sudden chest pain; wheezing; and swelling of the face, tongue, lips, or throat. This list is not complete; hence, it will help if you do further research.
