History
In 1995, the FDA approved alendronate for treating postmenopausal osteoporosis. The drug belongs to a class called bisphosphonates and is the oldest in the group. Thus, for the longest time, it has been the subject of numerous studies.
While effective, bisphosphonates have links to osteonecrosis or bone death in the jaw and atrial fibrillation. Meanwhile, some were also experiencing thighbone fractures. As a result, several users started to ask if they should stop taking the drug.
Researchers studied the drug, and numerous people supported and refuted the link between bisphosphonates and non-traumatic fractures.
As for the drug manufacturers, they said they would do further studies on its effects on the bone. However, experts say patients should always make sure that they need the drug before taking it.
