History

Introduced in the mid 1980s, Fioricet is a well-established brand. In 2003, Watson Pharmaceuticals, Inc. acquired the United States rights to both Fioricet® and Fiorinal® lines from Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corporation. Both drugs contain a combination of compounds that are effective for pain relief particularly in tension headaches.

Medical Uses

As mentioned earlier, Fioricet is a combination of three compounds. As for acetaminopen is a fever reducer and pain reliever. On the other hand, Butalbital is a barbiturate that has the capacity to relax contractions in the muscles involved in a tension headache. Lastly, caffeine stimulates the nervous system as it relaxes the contractions of muscles in the blood vessels and improve blood flow.

Warning/Precaution

You should not take Fioricet if you have recently used sedatives, alcohol, tranquilizers, and other narcotic medications. Also, do not use it if you have taken an MAO inhibitor during the last 14 days, for this may lead to dangerous drug interaction. Examples of MAO inhibitors include linezolid, tranylcypromine, phenelzine, selegiline, isocarboxazid, and rasagiline.

The same thing goes if you these conditions apply to you: stomach ulcer, kidney disease, asthma, sleep apnea, history of skin rash, history of mental illness, and more.

Immediately call the doctor if you experience the following side effects: swelling of lips, tongue, and face; difficulty breathing, nausea; pain in the upper stomach, itching, loss of appetite, and other unusual feelings.

It is important to always follow the directions in taking this drug. Overdose can lead to liver damage or even death.
