History

EpiPen was the first modern epinephrine auto-injector. Sheldon Kaplan invented it at Survival Technology in Bethesda, Maryland in the mid-1970s. FDA first approved it for marketing in 1987.

Over the years, EpiPen has been amid merging of companies, acquiring exclusive right to market and distribute it, and marketing new versions. Other brandnames likewise emerged.

In 2015, EpiPen had 89 percent of the market. At present, it continues to be a leading brand of epinephrine auto-injectors.

Medical Uses

EpiPen contains the chemical epinephrine, which has the capacity to narrow blood vessels and open airways in the lungs. Consequently, it can reverse allergic reactions. Specifically, it is effective in treating allergic reactions to drugs, foods, insect stings or bites, and a lot more. EpiPen can also reverse severe low blood pressure and treat exercise-induced anaphylaxis.

A person suffering from severe allergic reaction can keep EpiPen or EpiPen Jr. for self-injection.

Warning/Precaution

Even if you find this drug effective, you still need to seek medical attention to treat a severe allergic reaction. Also, take note that its effects may wear off after 10 to 20 minutes; therefore, you will need further treatment.

Before using EpiPen, talk to your doctor about your medical conditions. Make some discussions if you have the following: diabetes, heart rhythm disorder, Parkinson’s disease, thyroid disorder, adrenal gland disorder, and other conditions.

Moreover, talk to your doctor first before using the drug for the second time. Tell him or her if you experienced increased breathing difficulty, severe high blood pressure, or other serious side effects.
