History

The first launch of rosuvastatin happened in 2003. From there, the sales were $129 million and $908 million in 2003 and 2004. By the end of 2004, the total population of patient treatment was over four million.

Deemed super-statin during the clinical development stage, there were claims that rosuvastatin could offer improved cholesterol reduction and high potency compared to its rivals. Among its main competitors are simvastatin (Zocor) and atorvastatin (Lipitor). In 2006, published information comparing rosuvastatin and its competitos became available, although the studies involved are still in progress.

It was April 2016 when the FDA approved the drug’s first generic version, whereas Mylan received approval for the generic rosuvastatin calcium.

Medical Uses

Crestor is a part of a group called HMG CoA reductase inhibitors, or statins. It treats both children (at least eight years old) and adults with high cholesterol and triglycerides in their blood. As mentioned earlier, the drug lowers these types of fat and slows plaque build-up in the blood vessels.

Likewise, Crestor lowers risk of heart complications particularly in people suffering from coronary heart disease, diabetes, and other risk factors. Lastly, it is effective in treating hereditary forms of high cholesterol.

Warning/Precaution

It is not safe to take Crestor if you are pregnant, for it can harm unborn babies or cause birth defects.

Moreover, you should talk to your doctor before taking the drug if you have diabetes, thyroid disorder, and liver or kidney disease. The same thing goes if you drink more than two alcoholic beverages each day and if you are of Chinese decent.
