History
The discovery of warfarin started from an unfortunate incident in Canada and northern United States in the early 1920s. Numerous cows and bulls died due to hemorrhaging after undergoing minor procedures. Reports showed that the animals were consuming moldy silage made from sweet clover and stated that this functioned an effective anticoagulant.
It was 1940 when experts identified the anticoagulant substance as dicoumarol, a product of the plant molecule coumarin. Over the years, researchers found similar chemicals with anticoagulant properties. From there, numerous experts formulated different drugs including warfarin.
