Androgel is a testosterone dietary supplement used by men, even by women, for several reasons including the treatment of male hypogonadism. While it’s a non-prescription drug, interested individuals are well-advised to seek their doctors’ professional opinion for best results.

History
Testosterone, the active ingredient in Androgel, was isolated and synthesized only in 1935. Within two years, its commercial form as a pharmaceutical drug became available.
Medical uses
Androgel can be used in the treatment of a few testosterone-related conditions particularly:
- Testosterone deficiency
This may be the result of either primary hypogonadism (i.e., a testicular dysfunction) or secondary hypogonadism (i.e., a hypothalamic-pituitary dysfunction), which may also be acquired or congenital in nature. The testosterone production is abnormally low in either case, usually not due to aging. Known as androgen replacement therapy or testosterone replacement therapy, this is useful in the maintenance of normal serum testosterone levels for men.
- Aging-related testosterone deficiency
Since testosterone production can naturally decrease with age, the use of Androgel may also be recommended for older men. Again, strict doctor supervision is strongly recommended since the risks for heart attacks and stroke can increase.
Even women can use Androgel albeit the effects will be different for them. In women, it can be used to boost sexual desire, as in the case of hypoactive sex desire disorder. But the treatment of low androgen levels using testosterone supplements isn’t recommended for women with adrenal insufficiency or hypopituitarism.
When taken according to the doctor or manufacturer’s recommended dosage, Androgel is safe to use. But there are also possible side effects including swelling, acne and larger breasts in men.
