History
Alprazolam is covered by patent filed on October 29, 1969, which was granted on October 19, 1976. On September 1993, it expired.
In 1981, Upjohn first released alprazolam as Xanax; Upjohn is now a subsidiary of Pfizer. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved its use in the management of the symptoms of panic disorder. Today, the drug is among the most commonly used drugs in the United States.
Medical Uses
Alprazolam use should be regularly monitored by a licensed physician according to FDA rules and regulations. Basically, periodic reassessments must be done to determine the drug’s usefulness in each patient, as well as to prevent addiction and adverse effects.
The drug is primarily used in the treatment or management of the following:
- Panic disorder particularly in the relief of the symptoms associated with moderate to severe panic and anxiety attacks. This is usually combined with selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) as the first line of defense. The patient may or may not have agoraphobia to benefit from its correct administration.
- Anxiety disorders usually associated with major depressive disorder. These include short-term relief of anxiety-related symptoms and short-term treatment of severe acute anxiety.
Alprazolam is also used in the relief of vomiting and nausea caused by chemotherapy although it’s used in combination with other appropriate medications.
The possible side effects from its use include disinhibition, dry mouth, slurred speech, and drowsiness, among others. Jaundice, hallucinations, and suicidal ideation can happen but these are rare.
