Acyclovir, also known as aciclovir, is an antiviral drug used in the treatment of a wide range of viral diseases. As a nucleic acid analogue, it works by reducing the production of the herpes simplex and varicella zoster viruses’ DNA.
Here’s a list of Acyclovir prices:
In 1977, the discovery of acyclovir was announced. Such is its importance in disease treatment that it’s included in the List of Essential Medicines issued by the World Health Organization (WHO). It is also considered as among the most effective and safest medicines, as well as available in several brand names and generic brands.
Acyclovir is used primarily in the treatment of diseases associated with the herpes simplex and varicella zoster viruses including:
- Genital herpes simplex both in the prevention and treatment
- Herpes simplex labialis, known commonly as cold sores
- Herpes simplex encephalitis
- herpes simplex blepharitis, (herpes of the eyes)
- Neonatal herpes simplex
- Chicken pox, particularly among patients with compromised immune systems
- Acute mucocutaneous HSV infections in patients with compromised immune systems
The drug is also used in the prevention of the herpes virus’ activation in patients with compromised immune systems. An example includes cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy.
Acyclovir can be administered in three forms, namely, by mouth, by intravenous injection, and by topical application including eye ointments. Intravenous acyclovir is chosen in the treatment of several medical conditions, such as severe genital herpes, herpetic encephalitis, and chickenpox.
The common side effects include diarrhea and nausea although these are temporary in nature, while the serious side effects include low platelet count and kidney issues. Pregnant women and lactating mothers can safely take the drug although doctor supervision is required.
